Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning Presents the 35th Anniversary Fall Open House

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) will host their Fall Open House, at 161-04 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, NY, where families can sample for free its culturally and educationally enriching workshops offered year-round. On Saturday, September 22, 2007 from 11 am to 5pm, guests of all ages are invited to take advantage of free dance, music, theater and art workshops, speak to instructors and find out more about JCAL programs.

Also scheduled are performances in the JCAL Theatre, including work from the Teen Spot program’s summer classes and a performance celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month featuring JCAL teaching artists and Latin dance classes.

The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning will celebrate their 35th Anniversary with a year of special events & activities starting with the Fall Open House. Giveaways, raffles and a LIVE DJ will add excitement to the celebration. Open House workshops are free; registration will be available for those interested in participating in workshops for a nominal fee during the semester.

The Center offers more than 40 classes in a broad range of disciplines, all taught by professional artists and instructors. Information and applications will be available for Teen Spot, JCAL’s FREE arts program for eighth through twelfth graders; the Quilt-n-Queens Quilt guild; and JCAL’s new Monday Night Play Reading Series. Hundreds of people of all ages participate each semester.

The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is housed in a landmark building owned by the City of New York and supported, in part, by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency; the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with support from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg; Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin; the New York City Council; Council Speaker Christine Quinn; the Queens Delegation of the Council; Majority Whip, Councilman Leroy Comrie; and Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall.
