LOS ANGELES, Calif. — “Narconon drug rehabilitation techniques are exactly what we have been searching for,” says Victor Capaceta, director of two Mazatlan rehab facilities, named La Loma and La Veinte de Noviembre. Victor and other staff are currently training at the Narconon Navojoa center in the state of Sonora. They intend to bring home what they learn to help their more than 100 students struggling with addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

Laura Capaceta-SuterVictor’s aunt, Laura Capaceta-Suter, also a Mazatlan resident, is the one who told him about Narconon’s new techniques. She went further. With another volunteer, Veronica Estrada, she delivered a series of 6 lectures to Victor’s rehab students on The Way to Happiness, the last course of the Narconon(R) life skills program. Written by L. Ron Hubbard, on whose research the program is based, this small booklet contains a common sense guide to a moral and ethical life, something important for recovering addicts to consider. “This was a hit!” Laura says. “Veronica donated 100 booklets and we went through them. The precept ‘Flourish and Prosper’ is what sent them out the roof.”

It turns out that Francisco, a La Loma center in-charge, during an earlier rough period of his life, had himself had successful experience with Narconon. “We were using the program in Ensenada State Prison,” Francisco says. It helped him and others to really change for the better, he states. Francisco’s rehab students started calling Laura ‘the white witch’ because of the magical results being produced.

Three Mazatlan staff have joined with Victor Capaceta to complete a several month training session at Narconon Navojoa in Sonora. “Our purpose is not just to save individual lives,” says Jose Ines, Navojoa’s director, “but to share our methodology with other rehab centers.” Victor and the others will actually do the steps of the Narconon program as part of their routine training.

“Mexico is undergoing a severe and violent crisis because of addiction and drug dealing,” says Eduardo Garcia Lopez, Narconon International’s director in Los Angeles of the network’s 5 Latin American rehab centers. “We hear about Juarez and Tijuana, but the drug crisis is nationwide. Working collaboratively, we intend to improve drug rehabilitation and prevention results across the country. This is just the beginning.”
