Ca. Gov. Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Legislation to Crack Down on DUI Offenders
SACRAMENTO /California Newswire/ — Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement after Assemblymember Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) announced he would introduce legislation that would make it more difficult for repeat driving under the influence (DUI) offenders to get their driver’s license back:

Public safety has always been my top priority, which is why I recently signed legislation to prevent DUI offenders from getting on the road while intoxicated. As we approach the New Year holiday, I encourage all Californians to drive responsibly to ensure a safe driving environment for all motorists. I look forward to working with Assemblymember Hill during the upcoming legislative session to improve road safety throughout the state.”
Last October, the Governor signed AB 91 by Assemblymember Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) which creates an ignition interlock device pilot program in four counties for every vehicle owned or operated by a first-time DUI offender.
The Governor also signed SB 598 by Senator Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) allowing repeat DUI offenders to apply for a restricted license if they install an ignition interlock device on their vehicles. The ignition interlock device, an instrument that is installed to a motor vehicle’s dashboard, tests a person’s blood alcohol concentration before the vehicle’s motor can be started.
