BOONTON, N.J. /eNewsChannels/ — In 2010, telecommunications carriers worldwide are expected to generate just over $1 billion in new revenue by helping build and deploy mashups, according to a new market research study from The Insight Research Corporation. The term “mashup” (first used to describe the smart mixing of disparate musical tracks to create a new entertainment experience) in telecommunications has come to mean quickly integrating connectivity, data, applications, and decision-making components in order to produce a completely new recipe for a service or application that is more attractive than the sum of its parts.

Insight Research’s market analysis study, “Mashups in Telecommunications, 2010-2015” found that the ability to quickly combine disparate, existing applications or services in a way that will yield a composite, coherent solution to a need or demand in an agile and economical way will produce revenue growth for carriers in excess of 100 percent per year over the next five years. Such spectacular revenue growth is a result of the industry’s greater openness and standards that, for the first time, make it possible to easily and quickly join existing resources to construct mashup-type applications.

“Mashups are all about reusability, which is a magical word in any business context,” says Robert Rosenberg, Insight Research. “Mashups represent the democratization of application development process. AT&T, BT, Vodaphone and IBM are already on board, while Google and Microsoft are taking a somewhat different tack,” Rosenberg concluded.

“Mashups in Telecommunications, 2010-2015” segments the markets into data transfer and the access royalty revenue opportunities for wireline versus wireless carriers and further disaggregates the opportunities by various carrier-enabled applications components including social networking; location based services; presence services; VoIP; messaging; Software as a Service, conferencing; and streaming.
