WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — In honor of Independence Day and Thomas Jefferson, the author of our Declaration of Independence, the Gingrich Foundation has recognized the Thomas Jefferson Foundation as its Charity of the Month for July, 2011.

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation owns and operates Monticello, the mountaintop home of Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson. Since 1923, the Foundation has maintained this World Heritage Site and National Historic Landmark without ongoing federal or state funding, relying instead on the generosity of private donors to help preserve Jefferson’s estate. Today, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation is committed to its dual mission of preserving Monticello and the legacy of Thomas Jefferson.

“We are pleased that the Gingrich Foundation has named the Thomas Jefferson Foundation its Charity of the Month and hope this recognition will inspire new audiences to support our mission,” said Leslie Greene Bowman, president and CEO of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.

“The Thomas Jefferson Foundation sustains the legacy of one of our most important Founding Fathers,” said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. “Newt and I encourage others to support the Foundation’s important work as the trustee of this historic national landmark.”

Chief accomplishments in the Foundation’s history include restoration of the architectural masterpiece, reacquisition and protection of 2,400 acres, reacquisition of most of Jefferson’s original furnishings, creation of an unsurpassed library, and extensive archaeological research.

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation expanded its educational mission with academic and scholarship programs in 1994 with the opening of the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies. In 2009, the Foundation opened the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith Education Center with museum galleries, film, and classrooms. Today, 60,000 children visit Monticello annually.

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.
