U.S. Department of StateWASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — The U.S. Department of State celebrates International Education Week, November 12–16, with the theme of “International Education: Improving Opportunity, Strengthening Society.” The week is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. The U.S. Department of State will lead events worldwide focusing on the vital role of international education in economic prosperity and advancing the United States’ foreign policy goals.

On November 13, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock and Allan Goodman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of International Education (IIE), will host the Open Doors Report press briefing at the National Press Club at 9:30 a.m. to kick off International Education Week. The Open Doors Report is an annual survey that provides current data and outlines trends in international education. To request an electronic press kit, please register here.

Also on November 13, the U.S. Department of State, in partnership with CollegeWeekLive, will host the first ever EducationUSA International Virtual College Fair for international audiences. This free online event promotes U.S. higher education institutions, and answers questions from international students about American universities’ admissions processes, program information, and student life in the United States. That evening, Assistant Secretary Stock will speak at the reception following the Association of International Educators’ (NAFSA) Presidential Panel on Internationalization of Campuses. The Assistant Secretary will honor the presidents of the eight U.S. colleges and universities chosen as winners of NAFSA’s 2012 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization, highlighting the significance of their efforts to the field of international education.
