Jeffrey MaynardDALLAS, Texas /eNewsChannels/ — Biometric Signature ID (“BSI”) announces that it submitted formal comments to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in response to the agency’s request for comments on the Interim Final Rule enabling electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) of controlled substances. BSI introduced its BioSig-ID(TM) software biometric as a logical solution for the DEA’s identity authentication requirements. Jeff Maynard, CEO of BSI stated that their patented BioSig-ID software does not require any hardware and can be accessed from any PC, anywhere making the application practical and affordable versus other biometrics or tokens. In addition user survey results state that 97% would recommend that BioSig-ID be used for identity authentication and 93% of first time users found it to be “Extremely or Very Convenient”.

The new DEA rule which becomes effective June 1 2010, will allow practioners to write electronic prescriptions for controlled substances with certain caveats including using multi-factor authentication. The multi-factor options include using a password combined with a token or a biometric. However, states Maynard “the physician and vendor community will not easily adopt hardware based biometrics or tokens and this important DEA initiative will not have the desired uptake. Our comments to the DEA are very supportive of their decision to use stronger authentication and we acknowledge the difficulty of implementation. That is why we wanted to inform the DEA and community that Biometric Signature ID has developed a software biometric to authenticate physicians’ identity without the need for additional hardware or installation. “This technology represents the highest level of identity authentication and security on the market today.”

The BSI software called BioSig-ID offers a new twist to the traditional biometrics like fingerprints or facial scans. While traditional biometrics rely on physical (anatomical) attributes unique to each individual, BioSig-ID relies on behavioral attributes which are also unique to each of us. This gesture/signature technology is activated using just your mouse, stylus, touchpad, (or even finger) to authenticate the identity of the user.

“Since our system sits in front of other systems and we use a client -server architecture we can usually integrate well with most systems,” states Maynard. “Everyone agrees that biometrics offer the highest levels of security, yet uptake is always limited due to their difficult application, especially when accessing the internet. Who can afford to put hardware (fingerprint or facial scan readers) in large populations of physicians? We now have an answer to this problem,” said Maynard.

About Biometric Signature ID:

An award winning Dallas based software company, BSI provides software only solutions for identity proofing. Their patented BioSig-ID Online(TM) biometric signature/gesture technology positively authenticates an individual. Activation is from any mouse, stylus or touchpad on any PC anywhere, anytime. BioSig-ID captures HOW you write/draw including your speed, direction, angle and length which are unique to each individual. Users enroll one time to create a profile (stored in a secure database) and thereafter validate their identity in seconds. Users can also enroll in BSI’s second layer of identity proofing – Click-ID Online(TM) an image pattern recognition technology. The integrated configurable solution offers a unique closed loop that allows the user the ability to perform an automatic password re-set and avoid costly time consuming help desk calls.

The way you draw or write with a mouse cannot be lost, stolen or borrowed – a major concern with PINS, passwords and tokens. When a password or token is stolen or shared with a colleague, the system cannot know who the actual physical user is and the integrity and trust of the system breaks down. BioSig-ID stops identity fraud and builds confidence back into the system by restricting access to only registered users who verify themselves against their stored biometric profile.
