SOUTHGATE, Mich. — Dick Genthe Chevrolet and the Southgate Fire Department are teaming up to keep Southgate, Mich. families safe. During the “Cruise in for a Cause” event this August at Dick Genthe Chevrolet, a portion of all sales will go towards supplying families in need with free smoke detectors.

“Having a working and properly maintained smoke detector in your home is the first step towards preventing most house fires,” said Chief Michael Sypula of the Southgate Fire Department.

“We recognize that many people in our community may not have the means or the know how to buy a proper smoke detector so we figured this would be a great way to help the community,” said Bruce Genthe, President, at Dick Genthe Chevrolet.

From August 22 through August 27, 2016 Dick Genthe Chevrolet will be distributing free smoke detectors in their showroom located at 15600 Eureka Rd, Southgate, MI 48195. Supplies are limited, but every effort will be made to meet the demand. On Monday, August 22, 2016 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a special Kickoff event.

During the event on August 22 customers will be able to talk with safety experts from the Southgate Fire Department to learn how they can better prepare for emergencies at home. There will also be Fire Truck demonstration for anyone onsite. The truck demonstration will include a detailed explanation of the equipment and tools carried on the truck and how firefighters might use them in various types of emergencies.

“Nearly anything can spark a fire, from a tipped over candle to a gas leak. We want our local community to get out of harm’s way as soon as possible, and a smoke alarm is one of the best,” said Bruce Genthe President at Dick Genthe Chevrolet. “When we heard that our local citizens were calling our fire departments asking if they could give them smoke alarms, I knew we had to do something. Our Chevy store will be giving away over 200 smoke alarms to anyone who can’t afford one. They simply need to stop in our store between August 22 and August 27 and will give them one. I want to thank Chevrolet, the Southgate Fire Department and First Alert for partnering with us for this special event.”
