PLAINVILLE, Conn. /eNewsChannels/ — Loureiro Engineering Associates, Inc. is carefully adhering to its strategic growth plan in the area of geographic expansion of services. This week it announced a new office location in Rockford, MA that will be managed by new hire, Samuel W. Butcher, LSP, LEP, PG, LEED-AP, vice president at Loureiro Engineering.

Butcher brings nearly 20 years of experience to the table. Prior to joining Loureiro Engineering, he was senior vice president of operations at a Massachusetts-based environmental consulting firm.

In his new role at Loureiro, he will work as a Licensed Site Professional. Responsibilities include managing and overseeing assessment and remediation of contaminated sites in Massachusetts in accordance with the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP).

His particular interest and expertise is in the cleanup and redevelopment of underutilized contaminated properties. As a result, he will help clients to understand their responsibilities pertaining to the MCP in these areas.

Additionally, Butcher is a professional geologist and LEED-AP, credentials which complement his ability to provide assessment and remediation services to clients.

“Butcher shares the same ideals and values as Loureiro Engineering does when it comes to customer service,” says Brian Cutler, senior vice president of Loureiro Engineering. “Customer service is paramount in his work ethic.”

Finally, Butcher provides litigation support services and environmental consulting services across other regulatory programs including wetlands and underground storage tanks. He is also responsible for business development across a wide spectrum of Loureiro Engineering’s service offerings.

A member of the Town of Duxbury Conservation Commission which regulates activities in accordance with the state and local wetland bylaws and regulations, he is well positioned to lead this new office to overwhelming success.

“Having an office in the Boston metropolitan area now allows us to service areas that were beyond our reach before,” says Cutler. “Mainly, the Rockland office addresses a gap in service area coverage between Merrimack, NH and Wakefield, RI. “We are excited to have Butcher on board to oversee this new location; we have aggressive marketing and growth plans on the horizon.”

About Loureiro:

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. /eNewsChannels/ — The Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) wants your turtle pictures. “With so many people able to send an image right from their cell phone, we can quickly tell them which of Connecticut’s nine turtle species they have encountered,” said TCP’s Chuck Landrey.

“Plus we will send back a complete description of that species and its habitat needs, to educate folks about these amazing creatures.”

Send an image of any turtle you observe to turtleatlas@gmail.com for quick identification and advice.

In June Connecticut’s turtles greatly increase their movements as they seek out new habitat, mates and nesting sites.

Photos and detailed information on turtle sightings can also be entered online in less than three minutes at www.ctturtleatlas.com . It includes an interactive map that lets you pinpoint exactly where the turtle was found.

“We encourage people to also enter photos of car-killed turtles,” said Landrey. “We want to document where there are concentrations of turtles crossing roads. As hard as it is to look at those pictures, photographic evidence is essential.”

About The Turtle Conservation Project:

The Turtle Conservation Project is dedicated to protecting New England’s turtles and the habitats they depend upon.

STRATFORD, Conn. /eNewsChannels/ — Northeast Heat Treatment LLC announced this week the launch of a new business serving Connecticut and Massachusetts and upper Middle Atlantic areas businesses, apartment buildings and homes.

As background, the growing incidence of bed bug problems reported through the country which by some measures has reached epidemic proportions in the metro New York City area has highly migrated into other areas north and south of New York.

Many pest control operatives, entomologist and scientists all agree that high heat treatment is a highly effective strategy to kill bed bugs and any other insects without use of chemicals, the “eco green approach.”

Northeast Heat Treatment’s mobile box truck was specially designed to not only create high temperatures lethal to bed bugs and other insects but to also have temperature monitoring systems in place to measure the effectiveness of the treatment and protect assets. There is no need to throw out sofas, beds, furniture, books anymore.

Once the assets are placed in the truck, the entire eradication process take no more than 2 hours to bring effective solutions; saving money and giving customers peace of mind. Landlords who are faced with uncooperative tenants in dealing with bed bug infestations in their buildings can realize speed and effectiveness with the heat truck.

Co Founders of Northeast Heat Treatment LLC, Mike Morin and Don Frey, say that “this mobile heat treatment is a relief to many customers who fear elimination of bed bugs is not possible.” They also say their company has been getting calls from people who are seeking heat treatment on damp and watered damaged items.

NORWALK, Conn. /eNewsChannels/ — Things did not go as planned when Joe Presto of the Norwalk-based IT consulting firm Desktop Guerrillas tried to send out his monthly invoices last Tuesday night. After error messages kept popping up, Presto did a Google search and quickly determined that the issue was with Intuit’s system, not his own. The next morning he learned the full scope of the outage: 300,000 of Intuit’s clients had been affected, most using online versions of office mainstays like TurboTax(R), QuickBooks(R), and QuickBase(R).

Desktop Guerrillas’ clients could certainly wait for their bills, and Presto was able to get them out later in the week, but the outage had a far more debilitating effect on some other users relying on Intuit’s products, which provide critical line-of-business applications. As the comments on Intuit’s blog in reaction to its apology indicated, an extended outage like this can cripple a business.

Intuit’s trip-up is the downside of what many IT professionals dub the “Year of the Cloud,” in which more and more companies have moved their services to third party providers rather than running them in-house. Joe Presto is not surprised by the outage, nor the outrage. “To many businesses, ‘The Cloud’ is a magic place where issues and maintenance are a thing of the past,” he says. “In reality, these services can be just a prone to outage as an internally-run product.”

He brings up several points to consider:

How resilient is your cloud service’s infrastructure? “Clouds are a perfect description to these outsourced services,” says Presto. “Because there’s typically zero visibility into their architecture and operation.” A sharp web page or even a trusted name can easily mask a poorly implemented service, as Intuit’s case last week showed. “As Intuit described it, an accidental power failure brought down main and backup systems and resulted in a two-day outage,” says Presto. “This begs the question of why a backup system was so closely linked with the primary system. And why would a power outage take so long to recover from? That’s not to say that clients that host their own servers are without danger, but at least it’s within their control to design a disaster recovery plan.”

This raises another question: How safe is your data? “Clients who use hosted applications need to assume that their data could very easily be gone tomorrow and they should plan accordingly,” says Presto, a former IBMer who started Desktop Guerrillas in 2004. Many cloud vendors, he says, don’t provide an easy way to export data, which could represent a major exposure. “If businesses don’t have a way to personally ensure the availability of their data, they may want to look at other solutions,” Presto states. “For instance, although our ticket management system is hosted, we download data at least twice a day. Losing that data could cost us tens of thousands of dollars, so we guard it with our lives.”

Still, cloud computing is not all doom and gloom. “Cloud services can provide great value and are a valued part of any solution we provide to our clients, but we don’t make any claims about availability that the cloud vendor won’t back up with a service level agreement. The false sense of security can result in a business whose core processes are less protected than if they offered them in-house.”

MADISON, Conn. — CT Bed Bug Dogs (www.ctbedbugdogs.com) announces this week the launch of a new business serving Connecticut residents and businesses. It’s important to note that this sheriff does not wear a gun – he wears a dog collar! More specifically, Ruby, Pasha and Willie are adorable rescue dogs who have been highly trained and certified to find these critters wherever they are hiding which allows an immediate and focused extermination effort based on their findings.

They are key members of Connecticut’s first local company that deals exclusively with bed bug detection and remediation services. Not surprisingly, the company is called CT Bed Bug Dogs and is uniquely positioned to offer one stop shopping to their customers who simply want this rather unpleasant problem to go away in both an eco-friendly and cost effective manner. They believe the old shotgun approach (i.e., spray and pray) must be replaced by a rifle which the dogs help aim at the target.

Not only is their initial treatment focused, they also come back for a second treatment within 10-12 days and provide a guarantee to assure customer satisfaction. Hotels, Condominium and other multi-family housing facilities see the benefits in dealing with the CT Bed Bug Dogs “MAP” program that accelerates the eradication of bed bug infestations, cost savings and less chemicals in the environment.

As background, the growing incidence of bed bug problems reported throughout the country which, by some measures, has reached epidemic proportions in the metro NYC area has clearly migrated into Connecticut. Consequently, this company was born out of a combination of the growing need for this service in Connecticut and the extensive experience gained by its founders in doing battle with bed bugs in the NYC arena.

Dick Horton, a veteran of many years in the oil business who recently came on board as the sales manager, confirms what highly volatile issue bed bugs have become. According to Mr. Horton, who has routinely dealt with rather upset heating oil customers with no heat in the middle of winter, he has never encountered customers more emotional or upset than those who fear, or have reason to believe, they have a bed bug problem.

Mr. Horton also observed that many people who, by any other measure seem to be intelligent, thoughtful and rational, become absolutely unglued when a bed bug possibility appears. They certainly take it personally and think it might be an indictment of their personal hygiene; cleanliness or housekeeping practices while nothing could be further from the truth. Quite simply, bed bugs are hitchhikers. They don’t self-generate but need a chauffeur, albeit an unintentional one. Plus, they like to stay with us because we not only carry them around but we also happen to be their primary food source.

It is the unique characteristics of bed bugs and the proliferation of the problem that makes the members of this new company (human and canine) confident that can play a major role in helping to attack this problem in Connecticut. While they are a licensed pest control operator specializing in bed bug detection and remediation in Connecticut, they do also offer their certified canine detection services throughout the entire Northeast and the in the Middle Atlantic States.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A dark and brooding adaptation of the classic fairy tale, Snow White, will go into production this October. Several horror/fantasy film blogs broke the news about the new independent film production from Goodnight Film earlier this month. Connecticut filmmaker A.D. Calvo will introduce a much darker twist to the original Grimm fairytale, incorporating such controversial – but sadly topical and relevant – themes as drug abuse and teen suicide.

“Although a fantasy, this is hardly a fairytale,” said Calvo. “It’s much more about despair than anything else. I’m looking to explore dark romanticism as it relates to modern culture. I realize some might find my interpretation a bit disturbing,” he says. “This is not your mother’s Snow White.”

A.D. Calvo is not new to controversy; several years ago he produced a short expose on celebrity shock sculptor Daniel Edwards, the same artist who sculpted the nude Britney Spears giving birth. Calvo’s short films, including “The Several Severed Heads of Daniel Edwards,” have received over one million views on YouTube and have been covered by major new sources including CNN and NPR. Edwards will be contributing some of his work to Calvo’s film. One of his pieces, entitled Snow White’s Meth Lab, is already in production.

“The announcement of Snow White is resonating much stronger than I expected. There’s already a solid fan base growing within the Facebook community, specifically within the alternative, industrial, and Goth culture,” said Calvo.

His first feature, “The Other Side of the Tracks” – starring Brendan Fehr (BONES, CSI:MIAMI), Tania Raymonde (COLD CASE, LOST), Chad Lindberg (THE FAST & THE FURIOUS), and Oscar-nominated Shirley Knight – was completed in 2008 and has already garnered a variety of film festival awards.

“Snow White” is scheduled to be released in 2010, shortly after Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

After receiving direct/assumed premium and loss data, the Prevail Cession Web Service returns calculated risk-specific ceded figures in real-time.

According to Nat Curiale, Executive Vice President of Prevail, “The Prevail Cession Web Service provides a platform-independent link to instantly calculated ceded results. Today, application interoperability is key to the cost-effective introduction of new tools and efficiencies to insurance operations. Our technology brings the power of the Prevail Reinsurance System right to the user’s desktop.”

The Prevail Cession Web Service is based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language), a document mark-up language preferred by software developers because of the ease of transporting data across different platforms and applications. The Prevail Cession Web Service also incorporates Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), an XML-based communication standard widely used in IT infrastructures.

The use of XML and SOAP enables the Prevail Cession Web Service to be “application agnostic” and “platform independent.” That is, inward and ceded premium and loss data can be incorporated into websites and networks regardless of the platform those downstream services use.

The launch of the Prevail Cession Web Service is a further milestone in the company’s strategy for making its Prevail Reinsurance System recognized in the industry as the best in its class for robust functionality and quick implementation of the most complex reinsurance programs and treaties. The Prevail Reinsurance System contains robust functionality, with user-defined tables, rules-based and utilizes standard Microsoft software.
