HOUSTON, Texas /eNewsChannels/ — TeDan Surgical Innovations, industry leader in surgical access instrumentation, announces the launch of the Phantom Series MIS Anterior Hip Retractor System. TeDan Surgical’s revolutionary hip retractor utilizes a system of adjustable surgical arms with attachable retractors, enabling surgeons to perform the entire procedure without a fracture table or a surgical assistant.

Dr. Lawrence Menendez and Dr. Daniel Allison, Orthopedic Surgeons at the University of Southern California Medical Center, partnered with TeDan Surgical to design and develop this innovative retractor.

Dr. Allison shared their idea with the TSI team. “We wanted to create a system that could place the anterior approach to hip replacement into the hands of any orthopedic surgeon, minimizing trauma to the patient’s soft tissues and bone, while taking away the need for any surgical assistants.”

The Phantom Series MIS Anterior Hip Retractor System has been used in surgery over twenty times. Evaluations by surgeons have deemed the system a success.

According to Dr. Menendez, initial trials exceeded expectations. “We were nervous before the first surgery that things wouldn’t come together or the surgery would become more complicated, but from the first go-round, the surgery was made much easier. Since then we’ve only been making it better. We set some lofty goals and feel like we’ve accomplished them. We are very excited to start giving this system to other surgeons and patients.”

With the realization that performing hip replacements through the anterior approach may expedite patient recovery time and reduce post-operative discomfort, surgeons, with increasing frequency, are opting to operate using the anterior technique. Previously, this technically demanding approach has only been possible using a Judet style fracture table and two surgical assistants. The Phantom MIS Anterior Hip Retractor System allows surgeons to access the surgical site through the anterior approach on a standard operating table without a fracture table or additional personnel.

About TeDan Surgical Innovations:

Founded in 2006 with the goal to innovate existing retraction techniques, TeDan Surgical has become an industry leader in access instrumentation. TeDan’s patented retractors increase visibility for surgeons while decreasing patient wound size and the potential for tissue trauma. Experience the difference. Experience Innovation.

MALVERN, Pa. /eNewsChannels/ — Reaction Biology Corporation (“RBC”) today announced the publication in Nature Biotechnology, of the largest kinase profiling data set in the public domain, disclosing previously unknown kinase inhibition relationships. The data set was compiled from over 100,000 independent activity assays performed with RBC’s proprietary HotSpot(SM) technology.

The paper, “Comprehensive assay of kinase catalytic activity reveals features of kinase inhibitor selectivity,” was the product of a collaboration between RBC and the Fox Chase Cancer Center of Philadelphia. The article is currently available online and will be in the November 2011 print edition of Nature Biotechnology.

The data set from the study can be viewed at http://www.reactionbiology.com/webapps/kir/ .

To perform the study, the researchers selected 178 small molecule kinase inhibitors, including FDA-approved drugs, clinical trial agents and research compounds. These compounds, known to include inhibitors of all major kinase families, were then systematically profiled against 300 human wild-type kinases, also representing all major kinase families. Quantitative analysis of the results revealed that many well-studied kinase inhibitors had significant and hitherto unknown off-target activities. In other words, not only did they inhibit enzymes belonging to the same subfamilies as their putative targets, but they also inhibited kinases from completely different families. 6 compounds, in particular, had off-target inhibition levels stronger than the intended target. These results emphasize the importance of profiling compounds against a broad kinase panel before proceeding to animal studies or clinical trials.

As part of their analysis of the new data set, the authors introduced the concept of a “uni-specific kinase inhibitor.” A compound with a high “uni-specificity” score is one whose inhibition of one particular kinase greatly exceeds its inhibition of the second most inhibited kinase, a stringent measure of compound selectivity. This approach helped to identify many potential lead compounds for “orphan” kinases, enzymes for which few inhibitors currently exist. In a parallel analysis of the data set, the researchers sought compounds whose primary target was a cancer-relevant kinase, but which could also inhibit a limited number of cancer-relevant kinases outside the primary target’s family. Such an approach can serve as the starting point for developing new multi-targeted kinase inhibitors and therapeutics.

“Kinase drug discovery remains a significant interest for both our academic customers and those in the pharmaceutical industry,” said Haiching Ma, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer of RBC and one of the lead authors. “In the past decade, a large number of kinase inhibitors have been synthesized and published. However, there is no study trying to understand how these compounds interact with a large panel of kinases, especially using the activity-based assay formats used by majority of the kinase research labs. Applying the low-cost, high-throughput HotSpot platform, RBC has created the most reliable kinome-inhibitor database that a ‘gold standard’ radiometric assay format can produce.”

Dr. Ma continued, “This data set will not only help drug discovery activity in the industry, but also provide guidance for selecting the right tool compounds for use in routine kinase biology studies. RBC’s HotSpot provides a vital tool to evaluate these potential drug candidates.”

To date, RBC has developed and optimized assays for over 400 human kinases, including atypical kinases, mutants and lipid kinases that are important drug targets. “RBC is the market leader in providing activity-based screening and profiling. The panel we have collected has 100 more enzymes than most of our competitors,” said Mr. Matthew Oristano, Chairman of RBC. “With this continually growing panel of kinases, we can offer scientists a better understanding of their compounds and reduce the failure rate in future clinical trials. This publication has clearly demonstrated the value of including kinome-wide profiling as an integral part of compound lead validation.”

About Reaction Biology Corp.:

Based in Malvern, PA, RBC is a premier provider of drug screening and profiling services. With over 400 kinases, RBC’s coverage of the kinome is the broadest in the industry for enzyme activity assays. Using its proprietary HotSpot(SM) technology and other innovations, RBC is also expanding its services to cover a broad range of epigenetic regulatory enzymes, including HDACs, HATs, HMTs, DNMTs, demethylases and epigenetic readers. RBC provides its services to over 200 customers worldwide, including large pharmaceutical, biotech, government and academic labs.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. /eNewsChannels/ — Dr. Craig Spodak, of Spodak Dental Group in Delray Beach, FL, was recently honored by the South Florida Business Journal as a finalist among health care CEOs in South Florida. Leading health care professionals across Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties gathered to honor local organizations that are making a positive impact in their industry and community.

Besides offering state-of-the-art, on-site, medical services and specialists, Spodak Dental Group is focused on enhancing the relationship between the patient and health care provider. “I get to do what I love every day. I am honored to have been selected as a finalist with such exceptional healthcare organizations as University of Miami and the Cleveland Clinic. We have worked very hard to ensure that our commitment to the community and our patients is at the forefront of everything we do. It is always incredibly humbling to be recognized for following your passion and see that recognition put you in the company of such leaders,” said Dr. Craig Spodak.

The excellence at Spodak Dental Group can be attributed to two distinct beliefs. In order to be the best, you must work with the best and create an atmosphere where people love coming to work. To attract the caliber of physicians that Spodak needed to build this practice he realized he would have to completely revolutionize the perception of what a dental office should be. The perks of employment that attribute to the positive energy in the office are numerous; a massage room, a meditation area, company wide trips to Costa Rica, matching donations to employee selected charities. While this ensures that employee morale is high, and employee turnover almost non-existent, the true excellence is found in the organizational approach to growth and leadership.

Spodak Dental Group employees meet for daily morning classes. These classes focus on unique cases, new procedures, organizational growth and personal and professional development. Classes are facilitated by different teammates and industry experts are brought in to ensure that the staff is consistently working together to contribute to what is expected from the Spodak brand.

Spodak patients have become accustomed to thinking of dental care as much more than a reactive service. Dr. Spodak practices medicine with the intention of getting every patient to the point of optimal long-term health. The Spodak staff believes that it is their primary focus to develop and nurture ongoing, sustainable relationships with their patients and the community. Providing dental services that are affordable to the entire community is a key component of the Spodak philosophy.

“We believe that every patient should be able to receive quality dental care. Our decision to integrate leading dental professionals into our practice has allowed us to provide an unparalleled level of patient care at prices that are not seen in this industry,” says Kim Gallo, patient care coordinator.

MALVERN, Pa. /eNewsChannels/ — Reaction Biology Corporation (“RBC”), a leading contract research organization providing drug discovery services in epigenetics, today announced the rollout of a new product line, recombinant proteins for epigenetic research. RBC’s initial offerings will emphasize the histone methyltransferases (HMTs), including exclusive targets for which there has been no previous commercial source.

The enzymes offered for sale are active and validated for use in high-throughput screening assays. In the case of the HMTs those assays employ RBC’s proprietary HotSpot(SM) methodology, which couples economical screening with the data quality of a “gold standard” radiometric approach. HMTs are also routinely assayed by conventional scintillation counting in a plate format (TopCount).

“Our assay expertise is helping us make better enzymes, while the ability to produce new proteins in-house will help us expand the range of assays we can offer, and provide our clients with a more complete drug discovery process,” said Konrad Howitz, RBC’s Director of Epigenetics.

In addition to the HDAC, Sirtuin, HMT, DNMT and HAT assays currently offered, RBC has innovative assays for demethylases and epigenetic readers in active development.

Based in Malvern, PA, RBC has become a premier provider of drug screening and profiling services. With more than 400 kinases, RBC’s coverage of the kinome is the broadest in the industry. Using its proprietary HotSpot technology and other innovations, RBC is expanding its already substantial coverage of epigenetic regulatory enzymes. RBC has provided its services to over 200 customers worldwide, including large pharmaceutical, biotech, government, and academic labs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. /eNewsChannels/ — Naperville, Illinois trial attorney Mark W. Mathys of LAW OFFICES OF MATHYS & SCHNEID obtained a jury verdict against two doctors on behalf of his client Micheatria Donelson last week (October 6, 2011); case NO. 07-CI-01768. In February 2006, Donelson went into labor after just 21 weeks of pregnancy, and her child, Prince Embry, was decapitated during the premature delivery.

Mathys alleged that Dr. William Koontz failed to properly treat Donelson’s high-risk pregnancy by improperly placing a cerclage, which is a purse string type device to keep the cervix closed and prevent a premature birth. But when that cerclage failed to do its job, Dr. Koontz’s partner, Dr. Joseph Bilotta, failed to remove the device when Donelson went into spontaneous pre-term labor. The purse string acted like a noose around the baby’s neck during the double-footling breech delivery causing baby Prince’s head to be decapitated. Donelson witnessed this entire horrific event, including watching her son’s headless body handed to the nurse, the chin ripped off and the head delivered.

As a result of watching her child decapitated, Donelson suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. The $1.4 million award was exclusively for Donelson’s past and future pain and suffering related to her emotional injuries.

“Justice was served here today,” said Mathys. “The jury heard Micheatria’s ordeal, felt her pain, and understood the significant harms and losses she endured. This money will allow her to receive the psychological care she desperately needs to try and live as normal a life as possible.”

Unfortunately, Prince Embry was only 21 weeks old, was not considered viable and therefore not entitled to any independent recovery for wrongful death under Kentucky law.

Mathys, stated that the wrongful death law in Kentucky regarding the need to prove viability is archaic and unfair to pregnant mothers. “It allows the worst care to go unpunished, so that if the pregnancy fails to reach 24 weeks gestation, doctors cannot be sued for the infant’s wrongful death.”

Local Louisville attorneys Wade Yeoman and Larry Jones of JonesWard PLC were instrumental in helping Mark Mathys obtain justice for Ms. Donelson.

WATERLOO, Canada /eNewsChannels/ — RoweBots Inc., the leading supplier of tiny embedded Linux-compatible real-time operating systems (RTOS) products, today announced that the Unison(TM) Operating System (OS) is a core component in a variety of medical equipment. The Unison OS controls operating room equipment, intelligent eyewear and other advanced medical devices for the home, physician’s offices and hospitals.

The launch and release of Unison OS, Version 5.2 along with the Xilinx Microblaze softcore made this technology possible. Unison provides the key, high-performance software framework required. The Unison ultra-tiny embedded Linux-compatible RTOS opens a broad set of medical, embedded or imaging applications to Linux- and POSIX-compatible development with extensive connectivity options, data storage and substantially enhanced performance on the same hardware.

John Soloninka from HTX, one of Canada’s leading medical research organizations had this to say: “HTX saw great value in RoweBots. This collaboration produced the next generation of embedded microprocessors. Xilinx combined with the powerful Unison embedded operating system reduces the cost and time to produce more powerful medical devices.”

Unison’s open standards or Linux compatibility, ultra tiny size, zero boot time, high performance and modularity are the key features which substantially reduce system development risk, cost and time. Over 50 Unison demonstration programs run out of the box on Xilinx Microblaze development kits in 10 minutes.

MIAMI, Fla. /eNewsChannels/ — Southeast Computer Solutions (SCS), the largest authorized Sage Business Partner in Miami, announced today the availability of an interface between Sage Intergy Practice Management and Sage ERP MAS 500. It was developed and designed by SCS to allow system users to view and analyze financial data collected from both systems daily without duplicate data entry.

Primary Care and Specialist Doctor’s offices, MRI centers, Ophthalmology centers, ENT centers, Cancer treatment centers, physical therapy centers and other growing companies in the medical industry face a large volume of data entry and labor-intensive consolidation and reporting when their business and financial data is stored in separate nonintegrated systems. The SCS interface between Sage ERP MAS 500 and Sage Intergy Practice Management was developed to allow system users to view and analyze financial data daily (while eliminating double data entry) by automatically feeding the general ledger entries directly from Sage Intergy’s billing system.

“This interface provides great efficiencies for health care organizations using Sage Intergy Practice Management and Sage ERP MAS 500,” said Sonia Ferrara, president of Southeast Computer Solutions. “Executives benefit from being able to act on performance data and address operational issues or revenue shortfalls sooner rather than later. For growing medical companies it allows them to quickly add new practices into the system and begin financial analysis on the new centers immediately.”

For more information on the SCS Intergy interface for Sage ERP MAS 500 and Sage Intergy Practice Management contact Southeast Computer Solutions at 305-556-4697.

About SCS:
