KAILUA, Hawaii /eNewsChannels/ — Each woman’s story is different but the images and words portray a similar spirit of courage and strength. In her new book, “Portraits of Aloha Hope,” photographer Sohee Chu captures the motivation behind 23 women who live in transitional clean and sober houses provided by Women in Need (WIN). “There they are bridging the gap from incarceration, homelessness and addiction to a new life,” says Chu.

Through real-life vignettes, Chu captures the spirit of new hope. Whether they find strength through the joy of reading, a desire to spend more time with their children, or a love for God, these women share stories that will inspire many in their own journey.

“It was a privilege to connect with these women. I thank them for allowing me a small glimpse into their daily lives,” says Chu. She met with each woman to see what motivated them to move forward, and told each hope-filled story through her camera. The result is a powerful collection of portraits which say more than words could ever do.

The book release event will be held at Trinity Church, 875 Auloa Road, Kailua, Hawaii, on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. Many of the women photographed will be present with the support of family and friends; the author will speak and present each woman with her own copy of the book. “Portraits of Aloha Hope” will be available for $45 with all proceeds going to support WIN. Seating is limited; an RSVP is required. More information: http://portraitsofalohahope.com .

NEW YORK, N.Y. /eNewsChannels/ — 20×200 Gallery, the place to buy limited-edition fine art and photography online, announces the release of two new landscape photographs from the popular series by Christian Chaize: Praia Piquinia. Collectors now have the opportunity to acquire Praia Piquinia 11/08/10 12h15 and Praia Piquinia 28/08/10 12h20. The editions start at $50 for a 14-inch x 11-inch photograph and go up to $10,000 for an 80-inch x 60-inch photograph, with a range of sizes and prices in between. Three of the four previously-released Praia Piquinia editions have sold out.

Often recognized as “the beach pictures from Portugal,” Christian Chaize’s Praia Piquinia series has garnered admiration for being much more than that. The body of work now spans more than five years, focusing on a singular, secluded beachfront in Portugal. The images are shot vertically, as portraits, a departure from the traditional, horizontal format in landscape photography. All of the photographs are taken from the same elevated angle, capturing variables, such as light, weather, time of day, the ebb and flow of the ocean, sunbathers, and their colorful umbrellas. Praia Piquinia is an ongoing, personal record of an ethereal place over time.

“I’ve been living with one of Christian Chaize’s prints in my own home and fall in love with it a little more every day,” said Jen Bekman, art dealer, curator and founder of 20×200. “As the accolades and adoration for Christian’s work keep growing, it delights me to offer 20×200 collectors a new opportunity to own and enjoy these stunning images of this idyllic beach.”

Christian Chaize, a self-taught French artist, lives and works in Lyon, France. In 1992, he was awarded the Prix European Panorama de Kodak for Young European Photographer in Arles, France. For the past 20 years, he has had a successful career as a commercial photographer.

Recently, however, Chaize became obsessed with a small stretch of coastline in southern Portugal while vacationing there in 2004. His commitment to the Praia Piquinia series has, thus far, garnered Chaize a one-person gallery exhibition in Lyon, as well as in New York at Jen Bekman Gallery, and two museum exhibitions in Portugal (Sines and Lisbon). Chaize will be featured in a solo exhibition at Kunstburo Berlin, in Berlin, Germany (October 15 – December 31, 2011).

About 20×200:

Launched in 2007 by art dealer, curator, writer and entrepreneur Jen Bekman, with the central mission of “art for everyone,” 20×200 was created as an alternative to traditional means of collecting art. By printing in editions and pricing works affordably, the site gives a broad audience the opportunity to own a work of art, making the often-daunting experience of collecting approachable. 20×200 is based on the notion that living with art enhances everyday life and the site empowers more people to collect. As it works to support collectors, 20×200 also gives artists an incredible opportunity to present their work to the widest possible audience while maintaining the highest level of production quality and integrity.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /eNewsChannels/ — The Julia Dean Photo Workshops (www.juliadean.com), the West Coast’s largest non-degree based school of photography, will mark the opening of its new headquarters in the heart of Hollywood’s Media District on March 26, 2011.

Led by photographer, educator and founder Julia Dean, the school’s 5,000 sq. ft. space, located at 755 Seward St, features lecture rooms, gallery/event space, digital and traditional darkrooms, and a 2,000 sq. ft. studio. The move from previous JDPW quarters in Venice comes as the school, founded in 1999, dramatically expands its primary functions.

“This is a very exciting time for all of us at JDPW,” said Julia Dean. “Adding to our array of wonderful workshops taught by great photographers, we now have even more to offer. Our expanded space allows us to offer studio rental, as well as traditional and digital darkrooms. We are happy to embrace the digital age, while maintaining traditional photographic education as well.”

Two exhibitions on display for the school’s opening include the works of participants from instructor Aline Smithson’s “The Next Step II” class and Christopher Capozziello, winner of the 2010 Berenice Abbott Prize, an annual competition organized by JDPW, in honor of the pioneering photographer and mentor of Julia Dean.

Attending the opening will be prominent photographers, along with notable sponsors and partners including A&I Photographic and Digital Services, Canon U.S.A., and Universal Art Gallery. Baret Lepejian and Vic Lepejian, owners of A&I and A&I Books, which are allied with JDPW, will also be in attendance.

An hourly raffle drawing will be offered with the Grand Prize of one JDPW Special Guest Workshop. In addition, attendees choosing to enroll in a JDPW workshop at the event will be eligible to receive 10 percent off the tuition price of most classes offered through June, 2011.

About The Julia Dean Photo Workshops (JDPW):

A practical education school of photography, JDPW is devoted to advancing the skills and increasing the personal enrichment of photographers of all experience levels and ages. This mission is fulfilled by offering nearly 170 workshops per year, programming a variety of community events, supporting artists through group and one-person gallery exhibits, and by producing four annual contests. In addition, JDPW offers workshops with and provides access to some of the most well-known and respected photographers in the world, including: Greg Gorman, Duane Michals, Mary Ellen Mark, Sam Abell, Douglas Kirkland, David Alan Harvey, Keith Carter, Phil Borges, Bruce Davidson, John Paul Caponigro, Alex Webb and Joyce Tenneson, among others.

As the West Coast’s largest non-degree based school of photography, JDPW offers a broad range of coursework, with classes ranging from photojournalism and fine art photography to studio photography and portraiture. A Certificate Program is available for a comprehensive course of study, in addition to an intense, one-year “Full-Time” Program, where students may elect to take an unlimited amount of workshops for one year. For students looking to become more involved in the photographic community, JDPW provides monthly Membership which provides numerous perks and benefits, such as: discounts on tuition, free admittance to events and guest lectures, and use of darkrooms and studio.

NEW YORK, N.Y. /eNewsChannels/ — Colorful, abstracted and blurred, Bill Armstrong’s Mandala photographs are loosely based on Buddhist paintings known as mandalas. The concentric circles of images depict central themes in Buddhism, such as the Wheel of Life or the Map of the Cosmos. Now for the first time, 20×200, the online art retailer of limited-edition fine art and photography, makes two new prints of Bill Armstrong photography available exclusively on its site.

Bill Armstrong’s Mandala 1401D and Mandala 1402D are made from collages that have been photographed with the camera’s focusing ring set on infinity. Extreme defocusing produces a space of pure color that changes as one gazes into the photograph. Collectors wishing to own Mandala 1401D and Mandala 1402D can purchase the 8″x10″ photograph for $50, which is printed in a limited edition of 200.

“It’s certainly no surprise that Mandala 1401D and Mandala 1402D are beautiful. Achieving such feats of artistic daredevilry is nothing new for Bill-he’s been making and exhibiting critically-acclaimed work for years and some of the world’s finest museums have his prints in their collections,” said Jen Bekman, art dealer, curator and founder of 20×200, “How lucky we are for the artists in this world, who create these amazing things, some of which we even get to live with.”

Bill Armstrong is a New York City-based fine art photographer who has been shooting in color for over 30 years. He is well-known in the photography world for the vibrant colors of his blurred imagery. Mr. Armstrong’s work is in numerous museum collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Bibliotheque National de France. He has had work in many museum shows including: the Smithsonian Institute; Hayward Gallery, London; Musee de l’Elysee, Lausanne; Centro Internazionale di Fotografia, Milan; and Southeast Museum of Photography. Mr. Armstrong’s work has been published in many venues, including The New Yorker magazine, among others. He is on the faculty at the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts in New York.

About 20×200:

Launched in 2007 by art dealer, curator, writer and entrepreneur Jen Bekman, with the central mission of “art for everyone,” 20×200 was created as an alternative to traditional means of collecting art to challenge and innovate the status quo. By printing in editions and pricing works affordably, the site gives a broad audience the opportunity to own a work of art, making the often-daunting experience of collecting approachable. 20×200 is based on the notion that living with art enhances everyday life and the site’s intuitive and user-friendly experience empowers more people to collect. As it works to support collectors, 20×200 also gives artists an incredible opportunity to present their work to the widest possible audience while maintaining the highest level of production quality and integrity.

NEW YORK, N.Y. /eNewsChannels/ — William Wegman collectors will be pleased to know that the affordable art website 20×200 (20×200.com) released not one but two editions of William Wegman prints on Thursday, December 16. Avid collectors of the William Wegman Weimaraners will have a chance to purchase “Game Board” and “Blizzard,” available in three limited edition sizes, with individual prints starting at $50 for an 8-inch x 10-inch photograph.

Weimaraner art is an unlikely category made commonplace by Wegman’s long and fruitful career with canine collaborators, starting with his first dog, Man Ray, whose progeny remain a part of Wegman’s life and work to this day. While known to many as the “dog art guy,” William Wegman is much more than that: a pioneer video artist, conceptualist, photographer, painter and writer, he moves fluidly among various media. William Wegman and Fay Ray: Polaroids 1987-1995, an exhibition featuring 20-inch x 24-inch Polaroid Photographs of the artist’s second dog, is currently on view at New York City’s Senior & Shopmaker gallery.

Showcasing an ever-growing stable of artists, ranging from emerging to established to the legendary, 20×200 has previously featured four William Wegman editions; “No Fun Sleeping Under A Picture Like This” and “The Architects” with two editions featuring William Wegman dogs, “Pink Elephant” and “About Four Thirty.”

Sign up for the site’s newsletter to be the first to know when new editions are released. Written by art dealer and 20×200 founder Jen Bekman, the newsletter announces each new edition and introduces the work and artist, giving subscribers an insider’s perspective and first access to the often fast selling new releases. Thoughtfully presented and beautifully packaged, each 20×200 edition is accompanied by a numbered and artist-signed Certificate of Authenticity, artist statement and bio.

TORONTO, Ontario /eNewsChannels/ — If you’re the photographer in the family the best photo of yourself is likely on your driver’s license. With the Quik Pod® from Fromm Works, Inc., the patented and world’s first handheld extendable tripod, the days of holding out your arm only to get poor picture results are over. No more asking strangers for help. A person simply holds the extended Quik Pod® with camera attached and properly framed photos and videos are captured without the help of strangers.

The Quik Pod® invention came to Wayne Fromm when he was traveling with his family. He was growing tired of asking strangers to operate his camera for family photos. Fromm has invented and marketed nearly fifty successful commercial products and is particularly known for his toy creations including Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast Talking Mirror.” Over one hundred prototypes were created before he successfully manufactured the world’s first pocket-size extendable, handheld tripod for digital cameras, camcorders, and iPhones.

The Quik Pod® is made of the same material as airplane parts to achieve strength and a weight of less than 3.5 ounces. It comes with a built-in self-positioning mirror to help frame each shot. Retailing at less than $30.00, the Quik Pod® Pro+ includes a lightweight tripod leg adapter and is designed for point-and-shoot cameras, camcorders, waterproof cameras and for remote lighting. The Quik Pod® converts from handheld use to tabletop in seconds.

“Families on vacation, YouTube and Facebook users, will all benefit by making picture taking and movie making easier. Professionals are using the Quik Pod for photo and lighting solutions,” says Fromm.

The Quik Pod DSLR® for professional cameras retails for $49.95, and is super tough as seen in an online video showing it survive the torture test of it being run over by a 10,000-pound truck. (Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GfWLiz4w-8 .)

The Quik Pod® is protected under U.S. Patent 7,684,694 with foreign patent pending.

The Quik Pod can be viewed at www.quikpod.com/home.asp. High resolution images can be downloaded at www.quikpod.com/Press.asp. The Quik Pod can be purchased in the USA at B&H Photo, Adorama, J&R Computer World and in Canada at Henrys or ordered online at www.quikpod.com . In Europe the official distributors are Kaiser Fototechnik and Shakama Grupo Empresarial S.L.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Bookhouse Group (bookhouse.net) delivered a custom-published history book project to the Dallas Theater Center (dallastheatercenter.org) for a May debut event celebrating the regional theater’s first half-century of drama. Entitled “Staged Right – A Half Century of Passion and Performance at Dallas Theater Center,” the book weaves historic and contemporary photography with professionally written content chronicling 50 years of stage and production accomplishment for which it is renown.

“Our job has been to collaborate with and capture the creativity that is the hallmark of the Dallas Theater Center,” said Bookhouse Group founder and custom publishing expert Rob Levin. “We rarely encounter a greater challenge or a greater opportunity than to convey via images and the written word the energy exuded by a group such as this, which is accustomed to rising to every occasion and leaving a deep impression. It has been an exhilarating partnership.”

Custom publishing experts for two decades, Bookhouse Group undertakes its role in commemorating high-watermark anniversaries for local and community theaters, such as a 10-year, 25-year or 100-year observances, as a good time not only to recount a story and reinforce a vision, but also to refresh image and marketing outreach. Creating a commemorative history book with vivid writing and both archival and contemporary photography not only creates an anniversary centerpiece, but can also serve as elements needed to update web site content, marketing collateral and other external communications.

The opportunity to integrate the history’s elements into a variety of multi-media formats not only extends its reach, but also deepens its value across an institution’s development efforts. Museum quality theater histories are timeless-their relevance not limited to specific date or event-and are destined to become treasured personal possessions, fulfilling both the spirit and practicality of a commemorative investment.

For Staged Right – A Half Century of Passion and Performance, Bookhouse Group commissioned playwright and former drama critic Steve Murray. Steve’s extensive knowledge of both the artistic and business side of running a stage theater provided the book with valuable insight and sensitivity.

WARRINGTON, Pa. — “I had no idea the first time I photographed for Special Equestrians that I would be so touched by the kids and the staff there,” stated Rosemary Taglialatela, who came in contact with the organization during the Bucks County 5K Run last year when she was photographing the runners for the series, Special Equestrians held a race as part of the series; she’s been coming back ever since. “I grew up with horses, so the smell of the barn took me back to when I was a kid; but it’s the kids that really touched my heart. Seeing the relationship they have with the horses and staff and how it makes a difference in the quality of their lives was eye opening. This is a special place full of special people and I am honored to be their photographer!”

“I was there to shoot a program a few weeks ago. During part of this program the kids on horses were brought up to mirrors and encouraged to make faces and smile as part of their social skills lesson. There is just no way of expressing how it felt when one of those children rode past me and smiled at me. That is a moment that will be with me forever.” She has taken photos of the Sensory Trail, the Autism Program, and a Fundraiser held by the Warrington Community Alliance. “Rosemary has a great eye for the shots she takes,” says Tammy Westney, Executive Director of Special Equestrians. “She has taken photos that we have placed on our website and that we have given to the parents of our young riders, they are just beautiful.”

Rosemary’s work is currently showing at Art Bazaar in Chester NJ. She will be donating an art photograph to the Mercer Museum for their up coming auction event. She shoots portraits, commercial and events. “Recently I shot the Car and Flower Shows at the convention center and am shooting and documenting the behind the scenes of an up coming fashion show in Philly. Locally I will be shooting the Bucks County 5 K series again and will be shooting the Mercer Museum and Special Equestrians events. I am excited to have become the Warrington Community Business Alliance’s house photographer as well.”

Rosemary Taglialatela’s work can be seen on Special Equestrians web site and Pentax Corporations Corporate web site, as well as: www.2daysphotos.com
