El Constructor Latino Magazine has organized an event called Latino Construction Workers Day on Sunday, April 15, 2007
DULUTH, Ga. — A 45 year-old Hispanic laborer was working on the roof of a plant, located in Whitfield County, vacuuming rock from the membrane roofing system so the roof could be worked on. He was pulling the vacuuming hose used to collect the rock when he tripped and fell onto an exposed skylight. The victim fell 26 feet to the floor below. The fatal accident occurred on February 17, 2006.
This is an actual story taken from OSHA’s fatality report from 2006. A total of 27 workers died on the job in Georgia last year. The number of deaths among Latino workers has been steadily increasing over the last few years as Georgia’s construction industry has exploded.
In an effort to honor all the workers that died in 2006 and to promote work place safety, El Constructor Latino Magazine has organized an event called Latino Construction Workers Day on Sunday, April 15, 2007 from 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM at the Duluth Town Green in Downtown Duluth, GA. The event is being organized by El Constructor Latino Magazine along with the Mexican Consulate of Atlanta, OSHA and Georgia Tech. The event will include free safety classes (in Spanish) in the morning and a bilingual memorial for the fallen workers in the afternoon.
As part of the memorial, which begins at 1:00 PM, 27 doves will be released for each of the construction workers that died on the job last year. 27 bricks have also been engraved and will be installed at the Duluth Town Green Park with the name of each worker. El Constructor Latino has been trying to reach family members and loved ones throughout the state of Georgia of the 27 workers to invite them to the memorial service. Below are listed the names of the 27 fallen workers.
If your loved one is on this list or if you recognize a name, please contact the El Constructor Latino office at (770) 476-7678 for more information.
