WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William R. Brownfield and Deputy Assistant Attorney General Bruce Swartz led the U.S. delegation to the 10th Plenary Session of the U.S.-China Joint Liaison Group on Law Enforcement Cooperation (JLG) in Guangzhou, China, December 17-18.
U.S. and Chinese delegates discussed ways to address the pressing transnational criminal threats that affect both countries. The talks resulted in commitments to target chemical precursors to illicit drugs and cooperate on combating firearms smuggling and Internet child pornography.
The JLG dates back to a 1997 joint statement by Presidents Clinton and Jiang Zemin. The JLG has evolved into a wide-ranging forum focused on global law enforcement concerns shared by the United States and China, such as cybercrime, corruption, intellectual property violations, drugs, and repatriation of illegal immigrants and criminal fugitives.
The dialogue continues to take on new and pressing issues; at this plenary session, the JLG co-chairs for the first time discussed how to combine efforts to deal with the problem of wildlife trafficking.
