WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ NEWS: The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs will host approximately 400 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants from 50 countries around the world for an enrichment workshop in Washington, D.C., December 12-13, 20913. Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) are early career and prospective English teachers in their home countries who assist in teaching their native languages and cultures on U.S. campuses. More than 11,000 U.S. students at 213 U.S. colleges and universities are learning 29 languages from the current FLTA cohort.
FLTAs strengthen language instructional capacity at their host institutions by teaching courses in their native languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, Russian, Spanish, Persian, Hindi, Portuguese, Indonesian, Swahili and many others. FLTAs also attend classes at their institutions and as a result they return home to teach English with refined techniques, increased English proficiency, and expanded knowledge of U.S. culture and values.
The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 325,000 participants from over 155 countries with the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
