In the 40-minute interview, Attorney Heiser and Caregiving Strategies host Ellen Reaves discuss some of the most common mistakes people make when planning for possible Medicaid coverage of a family member in a nursing home, as well as the basic income and asset rules that apply in all 50 states. They also discuss how people can pay for their nursing home care by positioning their assets to qualify for the Medicaid program, the only federal program that pays for long-term care in a nursing home.
“It’s not a matter of hiding assets or cheating the government,” says attorney Heiser. “Obviously, that’s illegal. However, it’s vitally important that people know what the rules are and what opportunities exist to protect their assets when preparing for a possibly lengthy-and always very costly-nursing home stay.”
During the podcast Heiser also discusses why he wrote his “Medicaid Secrets” book.
“After 25 years as a practicing attorney I wanted to find a way to reach more people than I could one-on-one in my office,” Heiser said. “My goal was to write a book that would inform the layperson about the extremely complicated Medicaid program. In the book I discuss what the rules are, what the various options are, and what the latest planning techniques are that would permit a person to qualify for Medicaid and get their nursing home expenses paid without going broke.”
