KNOXVILLE, Md. — Consumer concern about rising gas prices late last summer has brought increased attention to alternate fuel vehicles such as hydrogen and electric cars. Mike Harvey of Knoxville (and Harvey Coachworks), one such concerned consumer, took it upon himself and has recently completed a 4-month effort to convert a gas-powered car to an all-electric zero-emissions vehicle.
The conversion, a 1992 VW Cabriolet recently won numerous awards and accolades at an electric vehicle competition and show in WPB, Florida. The objective of the car according to Harvey was to convert a car to electric with parts available to anyone with the desire to build one.
Designed for a range of 70-80 miles per charge; the car has enough range to cover Harvey’s 58 mile roundtrip commute to Dulles, Va. Driving electric will save Harvey an estimated $2500 per year in commuting costs.
In addition to the “Cabby” costing less than 3 cents/mile to operate, it produces no emissions, and requires far less maintenance than it did as a gasoline powered car.
