WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — On Monday, September 13, Assistant Secretary of State for Verification, Compliance and Implementation Rose Gottemoeller and Ambassador Richard Burt, the U.S. Chair of Global Zero, will discuss the New START Treaty and President Obama’s efforts to decrease the threat of nuclear weapons in the 21st century.

Burt served as a lead negotiator of the original START Treaty, which entered into force in 1994, and Gottemoeller served as lead negotiator of New START. The discussion will be held at Georgetown University’s Copley Formal Lounge from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

On April 8th, 2010, President Obama and President Medvedev signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (the New START Treaty), which would reduce the arsenals of the world’s two leading nuclear powers and contribute to strategic stability. It includes important inspection and verification measures to ensure compliance with the Treaty. The New START Treaty is before the Senate for its advice and consent to ratification.
