MONTREAL, Canada — A poker player from Sweden has won the first edition of the Everest Poker European Championship (EPEC) held in Barcelona on Saturday 9th September. During the exciting finale of the first ever European poker tournament targeting amateurs, one hundred players pitted country against country to become this year’s Everest Poker European Champion.

The players beat out over 20 000 participants in live and online competitions running across Europe since March. They each won a chance to represent their country at the championship and received a Euro-900 prize package including travel expenses to Barcelona. The winner of the first ever edition of the EPEC shared the Euro-50 000 prize pool with the other top 17 players from Germany, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Italy and Sweden.

Peter Lindstrom won the EPEC live qualifier tournament organized by Everest Poker in Wirsbo, Sweden on Wednesday 13th May. Peter plays live poker twice a week with the poker club Wirsbo Pokersallskap. The club has about 100 members and they sometimes play against other local poker clubs.

“I’m thrilled to have taken part in such an enjoyable and gripping event,” said Peter, winner of the EPEC 2006. “Everest Poker provided me with coaching and supported me throughout the qualifier tournament, allowing me to excel in the final against some tough competition. It was a great experience and I look forward to taking part in other live and online Everest Poker tournaments, and in the 2007 edition of the EPEC.”

Everest Poker is currently one of the top 10 biggest poker sites in the world according to www.pokersitescout.com. Though no European-specific statistics are available, given that Everest Poker gets nearly all its revenue from Europe, it is likely to be one of the top 3 European poker rooms. Everest Poker was one of the first poker rooms to take an interest in the European poker community by offering a unique and appealing atmosphere for European players. Everest Poker has also sponsored several key poker tournaments across Europe such as the 2005 German Poker Tour with the German Poker Players’ Association and the 2005/2006 France Poker Tour, and regularly organises online satellite qualifier tournaments for some of the most important live poker events in Europe.

The dates of the 2007 EPEC will be revealed in Q4 2006 and Everest Poker expects to have over 50 000 players registered to take part in the second edition of this very popular event.
