WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs David T. Johnson will travel to Sofia, Brussels, and Pristina June 7-11, 2010.

From June 7-8 in Bulgaria, Assistant Secretary Johnson will meet with Prime Minister Borissov and other senior leaders of the newly elected Bulgarian government to demonstrate U.S. commitment to the Western Balkans, and encourage Bulgaria to maintain momentum in its renewed fight against organized crime and corruption. Assistant Secretary Johnson’s visit will reinforce U.S. support for the reforms of the new government, and reinforce the message that the United States stands ready to continue supporting the Bulgarian government’s positive influence throughout the region.

Assistant Secretary Johnson will lead the United States delegation to the U.S.-EU Drugs Troika meeting on June 9th in Brussels. The delegation will discuss U.S.-EU cooperation on counter-narcotics activities in West Africa and Latin America, as well as support for implementation of the UN Drug Control treaties. A representative from the Office of National Drug Control Policy will also brief the EU on the new U.S. National Drug Control Strategy.

Assistant Secretary Johnson’s visit to Kosovo on June 10-11 will reinforce the United States’ commitment to assisting the Government of Kosovo in supporting the rule of law, while emphasizing the U.S. pledge to cooperate on rule of law issues. In meetings with Deputy Prime Minister Kuci and other senior leaders, Assistant Secretary Johnson will also highlight the need to tackle corruption at all levels.
