WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — The Department of State and the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) will partner for the Ninth Annual Global Classrooms D.C. Model United Nations Conference, to be held at the Department on May 1. This year’s conference will feature a keynote address by Special Adviser for Global Youth Issues Ronan Farrow.
Forty-three schools will participate in this year’s conference. The majority of students come from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, but there will also be delegations from Nigeria and Ghana. Through the Global Classrooms program, middle and high school students and teachers participate in year-round activities to help them understand the UN system, increase their knowledge of other cultures and traditions, improve their ability to think analytically and creatively, and tackle global problems collectively.
State Department volunteers work with many of the participating schools during the year to support those activities. The May 1 event is the culmination of the year’s preparations, and includes simulated member state presentations and negotiations on draft resolutions.
