NEWS: Ottawa-Glandorf Local Schools in Ohio has partnered with Energy Optimizers, USA, to improve the district’s energy efficiency performance for an expected savings of nearly $73,000 annually.
The $724,092 project will upgrade the electrical systems and HVAC controls in the district’s three schools. Funding is provided through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission’s House Bill 264 program, enabling the district to make these cost-cutting improvements at no expense to taxpayers. Launched in October, the project is expected to be wrapped up during February of 2016.
“We will replace outdated, inefficient systems with state-of-the-art energy efficient technology for a significant savings to our taxpayers,” said Superintendent Don Horstman. “Our students will benefit from better lighting, and we will reduce the amount of tax dollars that we spend on utility bills and related maintenance costs. Just as important, we will not need to request money from our community to fund this project.”
In total, Energy Optimizers, USA will:
* Replace interior and exterior lighting with LED lights
* Upgrade the district’s building automation system to create a real-time electrical energy management system
* Install energy conservation programming to optimize heating and cooling costs
* Install energy-saving features in the kitchen
* Fund an energy education “green team” of students.
The annual savings in energy will be the equivalent of saving 168 acres of trees or removing 110 cars from the road. More important, the savings will pay back project costs in less than 10 years.
“This project is an investment in the community and the future,” said Greg Smith, Energy Optimizers, USA, president and CEO. “The district is taking greater control over its budget in relation to utility and maintenance costs, and taxpayers benefit by knowing more dollars will go where they count-into the classroom.”
The partnership includes the resources to launch a Green Team, an energy education effort that Energy Optimizers, USA promotes in all of its school-related energy conservation projects. In addition to funding the team for two years, Energy Optimizers, USA, will provide Ohio Energy Project academic materials that are aligned to Ohio’s academic content standards. Green Team members will take part in STEM-related activities that are focused on energy conservation, while encouraging their peers to become more environmentally conscious.
