WASHINGTON, D.C. /eNewsChannels/ — Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), will travel to Wilmington, Delaware to sign a partnership agreement with Delaware Attorney General Joseph R. “Beau” Biden, III on Tuesday, March 26.
The Delaware Attorney General’s Office will join the more than 50 state and local entities from across the United States who are assisting foreign partners to enhance their law enforcement and justice sector capacities. This is INL’s second memorandum of understanding with a state Attorney General’s Office. Each state and local partner receives specialized briefings or training from the Department of State prior to any assignment. These partnerships enable INL to utilize the knowledge and expertise of active police officers, corrections officials, and legal professionals, including judges and prosecutors, to train, advise, and mentor foreign officials as part of the Department’s foreign assistance programs.
The State Department and the Delaware Attorney General’s Office began working together in November 2012 when two prosecutors from Delaware conducted training workshops in Montenegro on prosecutor-led investigations, plea bargaining and community outreach. They also visited two law schools in Montenegro to discuss the U.S. justice system with a particular focus on the role of prosecutors in the U.S. legal system. The partnership agreement to be signed on March 26 recognizes the relationship between INL and Delaware’s Attorney General’s Office and will support opportunities for partnership in the future.
